I'm thrilled we have such a strong weekly paper in the Carrboro Citizen. It's vitally important, since the Chapel Hill News has been decimated by dwindling resources and lack of interest from the folks in Raleigh. I've always loved weekly papers -- what they may not have in breaking news, they more than make up for in cogent commentary, in-depth analysis and local color.
But that doesn't mean I don't want a daily paper. And, sadly, though the N&O is cutting everything in site to save money, it just isn't cutting it for me anymore. Dwindling resources and a clear shift to covering Cary in favor of Carrboro or Chapel Hill leaves me wanting more. Searching for news of a Board of Aldermen meeting online last spring, I happened upon an article in the Daily Tar Heel. It was well-written and thorough. And it got me looking more and more at the student paper, whose City Desk is doing some fine reporting hereabouts.
In the last 24 hours, I've found better daily news coverage of important events in the DTH than in the N&O. See for yourself:
This week's BoA meeting on 300 E. Main
DTH's Aldermen Still to Decide Fate of 300 East Main Street
N&O's Developers Ask Vote on Carrboro Project
This week's BoCC meeting on the waste transfer station:
DTH's Board Takes Over Waste Siting
N&O's Waste Site Hints Dropped
Read them over for yourself and make you own judgment. For my money, it's worth the walk to the Carrboro Mini-Mart to grab the DTH. This "New" Reliable provides better daily coverage than the Old Reliable.
Local coverage of local issues is a critical component of a local living economy. Having a reliable daily source for breaking news and a thoughtful weekly source for analysis and commentary is crucial. Happily, with the DTH and Citizen, we've got both.
There is another daily paper, the Chapel Hill Herald. (Not that it sucks much less than the News.) http://www.herald-sun.com/orange
